20.4. 23- Class 3 Visit to Gurudwara

 Visit to Gurudwara

The field trip to a Gurdwara- the holy place of worship of Sikhs which means “door to the guru” on April 20, 2023 was a different experience for Class 2 and 3 Cambridge International Learners. They had to wash their hands before entering the Gurdwara and cover their heads to show their respect towards the Granth Sahib. As soon as the learners entered, all were amazed to see the place as it was beautifully decorated with lights and had an elevated platform which looked majestic.

The caretaker of the place gave the learners information about the 5K’s of the Sikh community before they entered. Children were on the lookout for an idol to worship and that’s when the priest came and informed all learners that the Darbar Sahib or Golden temple is the most important pilgrim place. He told them that the Holy Scripture Guru Granth Sahib, is placed on a takhalmmlolt (an elevated throne) in a prominent central position. Learners prayed to Guru Granth Sahib with their heads bowed down and hands folded.

Learners were informed about the symbols in front of the altar which remind the Sikhs to stand up for justice. Learners bowed in front of Granth Sahib and did a parikrama. Each learner was given prasad by the priest as we were leaving the worship place.

A short and pious journey ended with a smile and sense of calmness on every learner’s face where they learnt that they need to respect all religions and each religion is different and has its own culture, art, language, customs and tradition but at the end of it, they all belong to one race which is Humanity.

Learners learnt a new way of greeting people by saying “Sat Sri Akal” meaning “Truth is the name of God”.
