Visit to Sulabh International Museum of Toillets

Report- Visit to Sulabh International Museum of Toilets
24 July, 2015

“Child welfare ought really to cover all sorts of topics such as better water and sanitation and good roads, and clean streets and public parks and playgrounds.”

                                                ( Marjory Stoneman Douglas )
Keeping the above mentioned quote in mind, children of case i, classes I - VI visited Sulabh International Museum of Toilets on 24th July. Although the museum was very small and weirdest that children ever visited, but it was a good place to learn something which is very basic but very useful.

The museum showcased the services rendered by Sulabh NGO in environment sanitation, non- conventional sources of energy, waste management and social reforms through education of the scavengers community in India. It also had very interesting and unique collection of toilets from all over the world.

Children learnt the importance of hygiene and sanitation and various low cost toilets being constructed by Sulabh in all over rural India and some African nations. To quote an employee of the museum,” After all  having a clean and proper toilet in a house is as important as having a well planned kitchen.”

SUCCESSFUL PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE

1) PERSONAL- Dear Parents time alloted to you for the meeting is your own personal time with the teacher, Make most of it by discussing beforehand with your child any issue which he or she may want you to discuss with the teacher. If you are one of the lucky parents whose child does not need your intervention in his class matters, then it will still help to jot down some relevant queries beforehand. REMEMBER, there may be other parents with more pressing matters to discuss and the teacher also has to get back home to her children.

2) POSITIVE- A positive comment or feedback goes a long way in a child's development. Same is the case with grown ups too. Start the meeting on a positive note, be it class/school infrastructure, activities done in class, efforts put in by the teachers or improvement in your child's performance (even if its slight). Do not raise your voice or start blaming the authorities if you tend to disagree on any point or do not find something to your liking. Instead, give some suggestions and be ready to take some to resolve the matter. REMEMBER,a little appreciation from your side will double the teacher's enthusiasm and energy.

3) PRODUCTIVE- Stick to the relevant queries regarding your child's class performance and behaviour. Listen to the teacher's suggestions with a positive attitude and specify the areas which you want the teacher to work upon in your child. REMEMBER,its the joint effort of teachers and parents which contribute to the wholesome development of a child.

MOST IMPORTANT ; Accept your child as an individual with his own likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses, learning ability and capacity and personal nature.

Funny Proverbs

                                  First Grade Proverbs

A first grade teacher collected old, well known proverbs.  She gave
each kid in her class the first half of a proverb, and had them come
up with the rest.  These are great:

As You Shall Make Your Bed So Shall You... Mess It Up.
Better Be Safe Than... Punch A 5th Grader.
Strike While The... Bug Is Close.
It's Always Darkest Before... Daylight Savings Time.
Never Under Estimate The Power Of... Termites.
You Can Lead A Horse To Water But.. How?
Don't Bite The Hand That... Looks Dirty.

You Can't Teach An Old Dog New... Math.
If You Lie Down With The Dogs, You'll... Stink In The Morning.
Love All, Trust.. Me
The Pen Is Mightier Than The... Pigs.
An Idle Mind Is... The Best Way To Relax.
Where There's Smoke, There's... Pollution.
Happy The Bride Who... Gets All The Presents!
A Penny Saved Is... Not Much.
Two's Company, Three's... The Musketeers.
Don't Put Off Tomorrow What... You Put On To Go To Bed.
Laugh And The Whole World Laughs With You, Cry And... You Have
  To Blow Your Nose.
None Are So Blind As... Helen Keller.
Children Should Be Seen And Not... Spanked Or Grounded.
If At First You Don't Succeed... Get New Batteries.

EID UL FITR

                                     EID UL FITR

Eid ul-Fitr was originated by the Islamic prophet Muhammad. It is observed on the first of the month of Shawwal at the end of the month of Ramadan, during which Muslims undergo a period of fasting.

For Muslims, both the festivals of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are occasions for showing gratitude to God and remembering Him, and are an occasion of entertainment

Eid al-Fitr is celebrated for one, two or three days. Common greetings during this holiday are the Arabic greeting ‘Eid Mubārak ("Blessed Eid") or ‘Eid Sa‘īd ("Happy Eid"). In addition, many countries have their own greetings in the local language – in Turkey, for example, a typical saying might be Bayramınız kutlu olsun or "May your Bayram – Eid – be blessed." Muslims are also encouraged on this day to forgive and forget any differences with others or animosities that may have occurred during the year.

When the family is small, whatever little they have they are able to               share. There is peace.
- Philip Njuguna, pastor, Nairobi, Kenya
What becomes of the surplus of human life? It is either, 1st. destroyed by infanticide, as among the Chinese and Lacedemonians; or 2nd. it is stifled or starved, as among other nations whose population is commensurate to its food; or 3d. it is consumed by wars and endemic diseases; or 4th. it overflows, by emigration, to places where a surplus of food is attainable.
- James Madison, 1791, U.S. President
If the world is to save any part of its resources for the future, it must reduce not only consumption but the number of consumers.
- B.F. Skinner, psychologist and author (Introduction to Walden Two, 1976 edition)

Pressures resulting from unrestrained population growth put demands on the natural world that can overwhelm any efforts to achieve a sustainable future. If we are to halt the destruction of our environment, we must accept limits to that growth.
